The Hopkinton, Mass., storage and information managementtgiant (NYSE: EMC) said Wednesday the Media Lab sponsorshi is one of several initiatives coordinated out of EMC Research Cambridge, which will be located at 11 Cambridgew Ctr. in Cambridge, Mass. The center will house EMC’sx security-business research lab, RSA Laboratories, as well as abouft a dozen researchers, technologists and business leaderxsacross EMC’s business units. The companu also has research facilities in China andSanta Calif.
“Research and advanced technology groupsacrosss EMC, along with our global university research are discovering and exploring new technologiews that will shape the future of digitao information,” said Jeff Nick, EMC senior vice president and chiefg technology officer, in a statement. “This is an incrediblw opportunity for EMC to bring togethert some ofthe world’s leading researcn minds and innovators in areas such as personall information management, information integration and cloud As a consortium sponsor of the MIT Medisa Lab, EMC will be able to access the center’sd research on how people use and interacg with new technologies.
EMC said its initial collaborationj will be on new modelzs for data ownershipand usage, interfaces for business transactionzs and health care IT initiatives. A consortium sponsorship costs $200,000 per year for a minimum of three Sponsors receive full intellectual property rights to technology developed at the lab durin gtheir sponsorship. The announcement comes a week after EMC and a group of universities and technologgy companies announced the development of a high performancew computing research facilityin Holyoke, Mass. Other tech giant s have built dedicated R&D lab in Cambridgr in recent years.
